Northeast high school (NEHS) is a large, comprehensive neighborhood high school located on the corner of Cottman and Algon in Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The enrollment at NEHS is annually above 3,200, which means the school is operating at roughly 143% capacity yet this doesn’t stop it from being the most popular neighborhood school in the city (Herold, 2011, May, Mezzacappa, 2011).
This school is popular for a very diverse array of students: it is the most diverse school in Philadelphia, there are over 50 languages represented, and it is even argued to be one of the most diverse schools in the nation (Interview, 8/13/12 & 8/14/12 & 8/15/12). In the 2012-2013 school, the ethnographic breakdown is as follows: 19.3% Latino, 4.1 % Other, 33.1% African American, 20.9% White, and 22.4% Asian (School District of Philadelphia, 2012).
In my student teaching at Northeast High School, I have been teaching in 3 different classes: two sections of Advanced Biology, Pre-IB Advanced Chemistry, and IB Chemistry SL.
